Hello Spring! Let’s Create DIY Chocolate Pretzel Bird Nests
Last weekend, my oldest child was home from college, and we found ourselves snowed in (yay!). To keep entertained, we decided to experiment in the kitchen.
I remembered seeing these adorable bird nests online and thought it would be fun to recreate them. I can’t pinpoint where I first saw them because they’re everywhere, but my approach was based on trial and error since I only had a photo to guide me. (If you have a better technique, please do share!)
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Pretzels (we opted for sticks, but regular ones work too)
- Melting chocolate (we used Wilton, but chocolate chips work just fine)
- Candy eggs (we chose Reese’s Pieces Eggs)
Begin by breaking a small amount of pretzels into pieces to form one nest. Place the pieces in a bowl and drizzle a spoonful of chocolate over them. Mix until the pretzels are coated, then repeat the process until they are well covered but still firm—avoid over-soaking them to reduce drying time.
This is where your creativity shines! I started by piling the pretzels and gradually shaped them to create a hollow space in the center to accommodate three eggs. My daughter shaped her nest into a triangle before forming the center. As you work, you’ll notice the chocolate starting to set, so try to work quickly. Once shaped, carefully place your eggs in the center, and you’re all set!
*Note: If your nest dries too much before adding the eggs, they may not stay put. You can add a tiny bit more chocolate to the center or work briskly so the melted chocolate can hold the eggs.
Let the nests dry, and they’ll solidify into a sturdy treat for serving. They can be enjoyed on their own or used as toppings for cupcakes—the possibilities are endless!
Have fun and enjoy!
