We recently upgraded to a flat-screen television and said goodbye to our bulky entertainment center. Even though the flat screen is mounted on the wall, I felt we needed a table underneath. While shopping, we quickly discovered that most TV stands available were either overpriced or poorly made, lacking durability. That’s when we decided to get creative and explore the idea of repurposing.
After some searching, we found this dresser on Craigslist. I forgot to take a picture before we removed the center doors and drawers, but it’s just a typical dresser.
My husband repurposed some scrap wood from the garage to create shelves where the drawers once were. You can still see where he took off the hinges from the doors on the sides.
The previous owners had already started stripping the dresser in hopes of refinishing it.
Unfortunately, the top of the dresser had significant damage, which led us to change our approach. Staining wouldn’t hide the black marks, so we researched various painting techniques instead.
My husband removed the drawers and sanded down the stained areas. Next, we painted the dresser with a high-quality flat black paint, ensuring even coverage, and let it dry. After it was dry, he reinserted the drawers and lightly sanded the corners and edges for an aged look. His work was done! A quick trip to Hobby Lobby provided us with the perfect drawer pulls to complete the design.
Cost breakdown:
dresser – $30
paint – $15
drawer pulls – $25
total cost = $70
We’re thrilled with how it turned out! The top drawers are perfect for holding video games and accessories, while the four side drawers are deep enough to store DVDs horizontally for easy access. For just $70 and a bit of effort, we now have a unique piece that can be passed down for years.
