The notion that video games dull the mind is utterly unfounded. In fact, many video games can serve as excellent educational tools and can even enhance our cognitive abilities. This article explores the ways in which video games can stimulate creativity.

Video Games Foster Creativity in Children
Research conducted by Michigan State University indicates that, on average, 12-year-olds who engage in video games tend to excel in creative tasks including storytelling and artistic expression.
While the study also considered the impact of other technologies such as mobile phones and internet usage, it found these to be less effective in stimulating creativity. This suggests that video games hold a unique potential for igniting our imagination compared to other forms of technology.
Not All Games are Created Equal in Enhancing Creativity
According to researchers Seyedahmad Rahimi and Valerie Shute, while video games can enhance creative abilities, certain games are more effective than others in inspiring imagination.
Games that guide players through a sequence of levels with predetermined solutions are beneficial for honing problem-solving skills, but they do little to enhance overall creativity. Instead, games that offer more open-ended play and options for exploration and customization are most effective. Titles that allow players to construct levels or fully personalize characters tend to be particularly impactful.
Minecraft exemplifies a game that fosters creativity. With no fixed objectives, players are free to create their adventures. The game’s standout feature is the ability to design and construct structures within an expansive world, leading many to recreate entire cities or craft their own fantastical realms.
Other games like LittleBigPlanet, Roblox, The Sims, and Garry’s Mod also emphasize building and creativity. These sandbox games encourage players to experiment and create at their own pace. Elements of sandbox design can even be found in titles like Fallout: New Vegas, Portal 2, and Animal Crossing. However, it’s essential to note that not all of these games are suitable for children, so consider age-appropriate options like Minecraft, Roblox, and LittleBigPlanet.
In addition to selecting the right games, it’s important to create an encouraging gaming environment. Ensure that children have adequate space and equipment for gaming, and consider the internet connectivity as well. Performing an internet speed test can help assess your setup, as a strong connection will make gaming more enjoyable for kids.
Exploring Other Creative Avenues
While video games can be a great tool for enhancing creativity, there are many other activities that can inspire creativity without the potential drawbacks of gaming addiction. Here are a few options:
- Reading literature
- Drawing or painting
- Constructing with Lego

- Writing fiction
