While walking through the grocery store yesterday,
I was immediately drawn to the seasonal aisle overflowing with pumpkin spice and apple goodies.
You know what this signifies, right?
Autumn is nearly upon us! Soon, the leaves will transform into vibrant colors, the air will turn crisp,
and the kids will return to school.
Before long, it will feel as if everything is returning to normal, but the holiday chaos is just around the corner!
The festive season means more time with loved ones, and you want to ensure that no one in your home misses out on the fun.
So, it’s essential to prepare your household for the extra germs that come with the celebrations.
Holiday gatherings are delightful as they bring together your favorite people (and their germs).
This year, I’m staying proactive about health with some trusted mom hacks to keep everyone well.
- Manage the Germs: While I can’t eliminate every germ, I can ensure that commonly touched items (like doorknobs, light switches, and trash can lids) are wiped down with antibacterial wipes.
Having napkins available near snack bowls encourages guests to use them instead of their hands. - Promote Hand Washing: It’s easy to remind kids to wash their hands after using the restroom, but it’s trickier with adults. No one wants to passively remind Grandma to wash her hands before grabbing another chip after handling her dentures.
Providing easy access to handwashing stations with delightful-smelling soaps and festive towels can subtly encourage this behavior.
“Hey Grandma, don’t you love the scent of my new apple cinnamon hand soap?” - Well-Stocked Medicine Cabinet: Kids often take the brunt of illnesses due to their less robust immune systems. I’m always prepared for those unexpected ‘Sick just got real™’ moments with a well-stocked medicine cabinet containing Children’s Advil® Suspension (ages 2-11), Children’s Robitussin® (ages 6+), and Children’s Dimetapp® (ages 6+).
- Good Air In, Bad Air Out: On cooler days, let your home ‘breathe’ before and after parties to combat stale air. A fan can expedite this process! If it gets too chilly, close the windows but keep curtains open to let sunlight in. Sunlight is a natural disinfectant.
- Cooler Temperatures: While you don’t have to freeze, try to maintain a cooler home during party days. Viruses struggle to survive in lower temperatures, which is crucial as people typically gather indoors during colder months, facilitating the spread of germs.
