As the concept of work continues to transcend traditional boundaries, remote workers and travel enthusiasts are constantly looking for that next place they’re going to call “home.”

Though most countries are welcoming digital nomads with open arms, the perfect destination for someone seeking to work abroad needs to fit a comprehensive set of criteria, including connectivity, affordability, and cultural richness, just to name a few.

The folks over at tech.co took it upon themselves to discover the seven best destinations for digital nomads across the globe.

To do so, they used several indexes related to digital visa availability, cost of living, and proximity to the U.S.

The final ranking included these countries:

7. Indonesia

Between its dreamy beaches, vibrant culture, and low cost of living, Indonesia has long been a favorite among remote workers from all over the globe.

Digital nomads who’ve worked in the stunning southeast Asian country for a while now seem to especially appreciate the thriving coworking scene (complete with designated hubs and offices) and laid-back atmosphere that encourages professionals to establish a better work-life balance.

On top of all that, Indonesian people are famous for their warm, welcoming nature, a quality which is also mirrored by the country’s lenient digital nomad visa, the details of which you can find here.

6. Ecuador

If you’re planning on heading to South America instead, consider moving Ecuador right to the top of your bucket list.

The vibrant country is easily one of the most visually stimulating destinations you’ll ever come across, featuring stunning sights of the Andes Mountains, the Amazon rainforest, and the Galápagos Islands.

If it’s your first time going to Ecuador, though, I’d highly recommend sticking to Quito, the country’s lively capital, which, among digital nomads, is known for its historic charm, reliable internet connectivity, and vast expat community,

5. Georgia

Georgia has recently emerged as one of Europe’s (and Asia’s) best-kept secrets.

Thanks to the country’s progressive visa policies, affordable living costs, and stunning landscapes, digital nomads are flocking to Georgia in record numbers.

Tbilisi, in particular, has a way of fostering a conducive work environment.

With all that said, your time in Georgia won’t be spent closed in coworking spaces. This is the perfect opportunity to explore The Bridge of Peace, the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi, Uplistsikhe, Batumi Boulevard, and the Gergeti Trinity Church.

However, be prepared – the otherwordly views might leave you a little out of breath.

4. Romania

Though often overlooked by tourists, Romania offers abundant opportunities for digital nomads seeking an affordable, culturally rich destination that properly supports a remote work lifestyle.

Having been to Bucharest, the capital, several times myself, I can attest to the fact that the southeastern European country is criminally underrated.

The views and overall atmosphere are comparable to the likes of Vienna and Prague, but living here comes at a fraction of the price.

3. Mexico

Though a lot has been said of Mexico, its stunning landscapes, and its ever-increasing popularity, the country’s value as a digital nomad hotspot can’t be overstated.

While touristy destinations might not be the best choice for remote workers due to over-inflated prices, there’s no shortage of gorgeous cities that provide the same breathtaking views while also offering reasonable living costs and a reliable internet connection.

2. Spain

After a record-breaking summer, it was only a matter of time before Spain started coming to the center of international attention as one of the best destinations for digital nomads on Earth.

Remote workers here can indulge in a life of art, great architecture, and even better food.

Cultural cities like Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid offer that seamless blend of traditional Spanish charm and state-of-the-art amenities.

Don’t even get me started on the weather – the Spanish sun alone will be enough to fuel a fun, productive work day followed by an exhilarating night out.

1. Portugal

Boasting stunning coastlines, a laid-back lifestyle, and fascinating historic sites, Portugal has quickly become a haven for digital nomads coming to Europe.

With cities like Lisbon and Porto, which famously boast the perfect balance between a high quality of life and low costs of living, it’s easy to see why so many modern professionals are choosing Portugal as their new home.

Beyond the many coworking spaces in the country (e.g., Second Home Lisboa and Cowork Central), Portuguese cities give remote workers access to cultural neighborhoods, dreamy beaches, and a wide array of enticing local dishes.
