Though all travelers crave a sense of thrill and adventure from time to time, safety is still a key factor to consider when choosing a destination, especially for those planning a trip overseas.
When you’re so far away from home, knowing that you’re in a place that boasts low crime rates, political stability, and reliable emergency services provides some much-needed peace of mind.
U.S. News recently released a report ranking the safest countries in the world based on a survey of more than 17,000 global citizens.
These are the ones that made it to the top 5:
5. Denmark
If you’re planning a European getaway this fall, you’ll be happy to learn that Denmark is only one of the four European countries that comprise the top 5.
Strong laws, economic stability, and state-of-the-art infrastructure all contribute to a safe, welcoming atmosphere for locals and tourists alike.
According to Numbeo, Denmark’s crime index is 26.46. To learn more about the data that goes into determining this number, you can head over here.
What you need to know now is that rates between 20 and 40 are considered low, and Denmark’s on the lower end of that.
In comparison, the same source estimates that the crime index in the United States is 49.2, falling in the “Moderate” range.
If that’s not enough to convince you to visit Denmark this fall, it’s worth noting that the smallest Scandinavian country is home to some of the most impressive cultural, historical, and natural landmarks in all of Europe.
When there, you won’t want to miss out on attractions such as Amalienborg, Tivoli, The Round Tower, Legoland, The Little Mermaid, and Rosenborg Castle.
4. Finland
As you read through this list, you’ll notice that three of the five top spots are held by Scandinavian countries, proving once again that the region boasts a level of safety and serenity that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime.
Finland is not only home to an 18th-century sea fortress, diverse museums, and a buzzing cultural scene, but it’s also one of the best places to enjoy the Northern Lights this time of year.
3. Canada
The sole and proud representative of the North American continent, Canada was one of the more surprising selections on this year’s top five rankings.
However, those who’ve been following the country’s social and economic strides these last few years already know that Canada is currently boasting unparalleled safety and overall quality of life.
Moreover, the country is so vast and diverse that all tourists are sure to find an attraction or activity to enjoy during their travels here.
If you’re planning your very first trip to Canada, though, I’d recommend sticking to larger, more tourist-friendly cities.
Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary are all great choices that offer a mix of rich cultural experiences and stunning natural landscapes.
2. Sweden
It’s time to travel back to Europe once again, with Sweden coming in as the second-safest destination in the world.
Coincidentally, the well-known Scandinavian Country was also ranked first in the “Quality of Life” list, which U.S. News compiled by weighing the average scores of nine different attributes related to the matter (e.g., economic stability, income equality, political safety, and so on).
Sweden is not only one of the safest countries in the world, but it also boasts the kind of glaciated mountains and vast boreal forests that are impossible to find anywhere else.
So, if you’re thinking about setting off to Scandinavia this upcoming fall or winter, I highly recommend making at least one Swede city part of your itinerary.
1. Switzerland
Switzerland has a lot to be famous for.
Be it the mountainous scenery that seems like it has come out of a painting, world-class chocolate, or meticulously aged cheese, chances are you already know the country as the best in something.
After that latest U.S. News report, Switzerland has one more thing to be proud of – being the safest country on Earth.
Considering its impressively low crime rate, it should come as no surprise that global citizens deemed the Central European country as the safe haven of the world.
