For American travelers this year, North America and Europe have remained the most enticing places to travel to.

It’s easy to see why, given the accessibility, cultural highlights, and stunning natural beauty that many destinations here possess.

These destinations have also been breaking all kinds of pre-pandemic travel records. From tropical beach getaways and snow-capped mountains to ruins and castles, these places offer the diverse range of experiences travelers from the USA are looking for.

According to new data from Google, these three countries are the top destinations for American travelers in 2023.

Here’s why:

Mexico

This year, Mexico has been a trending destination for American travelers.

From its tropical beaches and culturally rich cities, Americans have ditched the long flights to Asia and much of Europe and decided to visit their beautiful southern neighbor.

According to some of the latest data on American travel habits, Mexican cities have accounted for over 28% of flight bookings from January to August. This outpaces usual travel hotspots like Paris, Rome, and Tokyo.

This year’s trends have pointed to culturally rich experiences and affordability as being some of the biggest draws for American travelers. Mexico, with its 35 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, world-famous museums, and low cost, checks off all the boxes.

To make it even more appealing to U.S. travelers is its beauty. Americans can take a short flight and find themselves in some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes on the planet, with world-famous cuisine to top it off.

By far, the most popular destination in Mexico is Cancun. Its stunning beaches, accessibility, and access to Mayan ruins make it increasingly popular for travelers looking for a mix of fun in the sun and cultural experiences.

United Kingdom

The UK has plenty of historical landmarks, non-stop nightlife, and a common language, making it an obvious choice for American travelers.

However, this year, the enchanting island nation has been shattering its pre-pandemic tourism records.

London, the UK. Red bus in motion and Big Ben, the Palace of Westminster.

London, its capital and largest city, has been drawing in huge amounts of American visitors this year. The incredible global city has accounted for 8.5% of flight bookings between January and August.

Many travelers spend time experiencing London’s famous museums and landmarks. The city’s bar and restaurant scene is one of the world’s best, as is its nightlife.

Other people are choosing to avoid the crowds and travel outside of the city to the small towns, villages, and castles that dot the countryside. Other UK cities are seeing an uptick in American travelers as well thanks to popular music festivals and seasonal events.

Scotland and Wales are also part of the UK and make for the perfect culturally rich getaways. Scotland in particular, has seen up to a 70% increase in American visitors over the last few years.

Arguably, the biggest draw for many Americans is the diversity of sights and experiences the UK offers. You can find yourself wandering around the 12th-century castle ruins one minute and attending one of the world’s biggest concerts the next, something few other destinations can offer.

Canada

The USA’s neighbor to the north has also become a popular travel destination for Americans in 2023.

The country is sometimes just a short drive away from U.S. cities, and nothing beats the country’s friendly vibe.

What’s more, is that Americans are looking for nature-filled experiences and traveling off the beaten path. With so many national parks and accessible wildernesses, Canada has become a sought-after place for thrill seekers and nature lovers.

While cities like Toronto and Vancouver have been bringing in visitors looking for culture and nightlife, Canada’s outdoor gems, such as Banff and Jasper National Park, have also increased.

So far, the land of maple is showing no signs of slowing down. To make the country even more attractive to American travelers, visitors from the U.S. can stay for up to 6 months as digital nomads with no minimum income needed.
