The popular internet speed test site Ookla is continuously monitoring and ranking locations around the world to best determine who has the best internet speeds.
Recently they analyzed the average mobile internet and broadband speeds in 200 cities across 179 countries for the month of March 2023.
The rankings take both the mobile and broadband download and upload speeds, as well as latency (the delay in network communication), into account.
According to Ookla’s ‘Speedtest Global Index’, here are the cities that ranked as having the fastest internet right now.
Cities With The Fastest Mobile Wi-Fi:
Ar-Rayyan, Qatar
- Average March 2023 download speed: 223.87 Mbps
Moving up 9 places on the list is Qatar’s Ar-Rayyan. With a mobile upload of 27.38 Mbps and a latency of 19ms, you can surf without interruption here.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
- Average March 2023 download speed: 210.70 Mbps
Moving down on the list by one spot from last month is mega-city Dubai. Offering a mobile upload of 25.04 Mbps and a latency of 18ms, it’s no wonder so many digital nomads flock here.

Copenhagen, Denmark
- Average March 2023 download speed: 198.92 Mbps
If you are one of the many who plan to visit Copenhagen this year, there’s no need to worry about staying connected.
With a mobile upload of 22.88 Mbps and a latency of 16, this charming city has no issues with speeds.
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
- Average March 2023 download speed: 179.63 Mbps
Uber-modern Abu Dhabi moved down 2 spots this month, although it’s still pretty high worldwide. With an upload of 22.05 Mbps and a latency of 22ms, this looking to log on will be all set here.
Oslo, Norway
- Average March 2023 download speed: 177.06 Mbps
Speeding up 4 places on the list is Norway’s capital city, with an upload of 25.50 Mbps and a latency of 21ms, keeping everyone connected daily.
Rounding out the top 10 cities with the fastest mobile Wi-Fi right now are:

- Doha, Qatar
- Beijing, China
- Shanghai, China

Cities With The Fastest Fixed Broadband:
Beijing, China
- Average March 2023 download speed: 264.92 Mbps
China’s capital city is, of course, modern and well-connected, clocking in at a fixed broadband upload speed of 37.44 Mbps and a very low latency of 8ms.
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
- Average March 2023 download speed: 261.97 Mbps
Not only does Abu Dhabi rank high for mobile Wi-Fi but with an upload of 118.24 Mbps and a latency of only 5ms, its fixed broadband is equally impressive.
Shanghai, China
- Average March 2023 download speed: 232.08 Mbps
Moving up a spot is China’s metropolis of Shanghai, with an upload of 48.14 Mbps, and a low latency of 6ms.
Bangkok, Thailand
- Average March 2023 download speed: 224.67 Mbps
Another Asian megacity that moved up a spot this month is Bangkok, with an upload of 193.22 Mbps, and a latency of 5.
New York, United States
- Average March 2023 download speed: 224.41 Mbps
Moving up a spot from last month’s rankings is the United State’s only entry on this list. Those using fixed broadband in New York City enjoyed an average upload speed of 30.54 Mbps, and a latency of 10ms last month.
Finishing off the top 10 cities with the fastest fixed broadband speeds are:
- Lyon, France
- Valparaiso, Chile
- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Bucharest, Romania
- Los Angeles, United States
