This summer, more Americans than ever are choosing the UK as their vacation destination.
Demand for transatlantic travel is incredibly high, and a huge number of European countries are taking advantage of this.
According to booking data analysis by Trip.com, there has been an incredible 145% increase in the number of passengers traveling from the U.S. to the UK, year on year.
VisitBritain reports that more U.S. travelers to the UK than before the pandemic and that American visitors are spending more now than they did in 2019.
You won’t be surprised to learn that London is the most popular destination for American visitors in the UK. But where else are U.S. travelers choosing to visit?
These are the 3 most popular UK destinations for U.S. travelers right now:
London
In May, airline data showed that London is the most popular summer vacation destination for U.S. travelers.
Delta added 20 percent more seats flying from the States to London in the summer of 2023 compared to the same time period in 2019 to meet demand.
The opportunity to explore the Royal Palaces following the Coronation of King Charles III and the abundance of historical attractions makes London a natural fit for U.S. travelers looking for a cultural break.
Americans also list the pop culture, the accents, and the pubs as reasons they want to visit London this summer.
The relatively compact nature of London’s cultural center makes it easy for American visitors to explore. There’s nothing quite like hopping on an iconic red double-decker bus and taking in some of the most iconic sights in the world from its top deck.

Travelers can also take a river cruise along the River Thames and see sites such as the London Eye, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, and Houses of Parliament without getting out of their seats.
Manchester
The second most popular UK destination for U.S. visitors this summer is Manchester.
Manchester is not a traditional tourist destination, as historically, it was an industrial city. This means that it doesn’t have the same Royal associations or obvious cultural attractions as London.
Despite this, a new report found that Manchester was the most popular 2023 destination for Europeans.
There are many reasons for this.
Soccer fans and sports enthusiasts can take tours of the iconic Etihad Stadium or Old Trafford Football Stadium. Old Trafford is the home of Manchester United, the club with the biggest fan base in the world.
Manchester is often called the first modern city, and it was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. You’ll find a host of museums to explore this cultural phenomenon, as well as wonderful restaurants, bars, and shopping.
Manchester tends to be much more affordable than London, making it an ideal choice for travelers on a budget. And the city is in a great location to use as a base and explore the rest of Northern England.
Edinburgh
Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and the most visited Scottish city, as well as being the third most-visited city in the UK.
Scotland has seen a huge increase in the number of American visitors in recent years, and Edinburgh is often chosen as the best European city for first-time American travelers.
Edinburgh is relatively compact and easy to navigate on foot. The shared language means that new travelers won’t have to navigate a language barrier.
Summer is a great time to visit Edinburgh. The famous Fringe Festival takes place in the city every August and is considered ‘one of the greatest celebrations of arts and culture on the planet’.
Music fans can also visit the imposing Edinburgh Castle and enjoy the Edinburgh Royal Military Tatoo during August: an impressive performance of traditional pipes and drums.
Outside of the city, Edinburgh is also ideally situated for travelers hoping to explore the unique beauty of the Scottish countryside as part of their trip.
