The excitement surrounding a new airport in one of the most popular areas of Mexico is palpable.
Tulum International Airport in the Yucatan Peninsula will make it even easier and quite possibly cheaper for Americans to visit the spellbinding states of Quintana Roo, Yucatan, and Campeche.
Several major airlines, such as Delta, American, and Spirit have already announced their plans to fly to this new airport from cities including Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Charlotte, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale.
Now, another four more major American cities are set to get nonstop flights to this magical Mexican destination, courtesy of United.
So, travelers who live close to New York (Newark), Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago, it’s time to pack the sunblock and start brushing up on your Spanish. Tulum is calling.
What Flights Are Being Added And When?
United will begin servicing Tulum International Airport (TQO) with 22 weekly flights from Newark, Houston, and Chicago starting from March 31 in 2024.
Then, from May 23, it will be adding daily seasonal flights to this new hub in the Mexican Caribbean from Los Angeles.
This means that there will be up to five daily flights to Tulum from around the country with United by the summer of 2024.
The flights are still subject to government approval, but United says they should be on sale by mid-to-late-November.
Why Will 2024 Be A Good Time To Visit Tulum?
This could easily be mistaken for a trick question because there’s never truly a bad time to visit this stunning jewel in Mexico’s crown.
However, 2024 will be an exceptional year for this area – not only will the new airport make access easier, the hotly-anticipated Maya train should be fully operational too.
This big-money development will allow tourists to safely, easily, and cheaply get around to see many of the region’s star attractions including colonial beauty Merida, stunning lake town Bacalar, coastal beauty Chetumal, and even destinations in Tabasco and Chiapas states.
This new train is even expected to have its own smartphone app, which will make booking tickets a cinch for international visitors.
All this means that your planned trip to this gorgeous region of Mexico could well be extended by a few weeks as it will be so much easier to get around and see more.
What’s So Great About Tulum?
If you have never had the pleasure of visiting Tulum and the surrounding area, then you will be in for a treat if you do decide to take one of these new nonstop flights.
It’s one of Mexico’s premier beach resorts with no shortage of accommodations to suit many different budgets facing out into the shimmering Caribbean Sea.
Soaking up the sun, sea, and sand is not the only thing to do here though.
The area is rich in ancient Maya history, from the unique coastal temples around Tulum and the nearby iconic Chichen Itza temple complex to lesser-known ancient cities such as Coba.
If you’re not only a history buff but also interested in geography, then you should definitely check out some of the cenotes in the area.
These natural sinkholes are often enchanting, beautiful, and quiet places to relax, take in nature, and even enjoy a cooling dip.
Because of the importance of Tulum to Mexico as a tourist destination, concerted efforts have been made by the government to improve safety in the region over the last year.
Anything Else?
Yes! These new nonstop flights to Tulum from United are part of a wider expansion of its services to Mexico for the winter and spring.
Chicago will have four daily flights to Cancun, Houston will be running three daily flights to Leon/Guanajuato, Denver will offer two daily flights to Puerto Vallarta, and San Francisco will benefit from two daily flights to Puerto Vallarta and San Jose del Cabo.
With these plus the expansions and additions of other airlines, Americans have never had it so good when it comes to flight choice and availability to its favorite overseas destination.
