Earlier this week, Hawaiian Airlines unveiled the new design for its Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The design, which takes inspiration from elements of Hawaiian nature, includes luxurious lie-flat suites as well as several upgrades to the economy cabin.

The new features are scheduled to roll out over the next few years as its 12 new Dreamliners come into service, with the first delivery scheduled for this coming November.

Evoking Hawaii’s Environment In the Sky

Hawaii is known for its breathtaking natural environment, and Hawaiian Airlines hopes to give passengers a taste of that during their flights.

The overall aesthetic of the 300-seat planes is inspired by early Polynesian voyages as well as the textures and colors of natural elements found throughout the Islands.

From the deep aqua colors found in the carpets to the seat fabric inspired by native plants, passengers will enjoy tasteful accents of Hawaii throughout their journey.

No detail was left behind – the lavatory floors invoke shimmering black volcanic sand, and the seat row numbers will feature elements of the Hawaiian language.

Avi Manis, Hawaiian’s Chief Marketing Officer, explained the significance of the new design.

“The combination of our evocative cabin design and unparalleled service will make our 787 the most relaxing and enjoyable choice for travel to and from Hawai’i. We take pride in sharing our home with our guests and the design and details of this product truly reflect what it means to be the flagship carrier of the Hawaiian Islands.”

Luxury Leihōkū Suites

The most enticing feature of the new design is perhaps the glamourous Leihōkū Suites.

In the Hawaiian language, Leihōkū means “garland of stars” and is a nod to the Polynesian explorers who navigated the Pacific using stars and other cues from nature.

That concept is reflected in the ceiling design, which allows passengers to relax while looking up at the starlit cabin ceiling. The simulated cabin sky will display lighting evoking Hawaii’s famous sunrises and sunsets, as well as a sea of stars.

Other elements of the 34-suite cabin include fully lie-flat seats, an 18-inch screen for in-flight entertainment, personal outlets, and wireless charging capabilities.

The 1-2-1 configuration allows for every seat to have direct access to the aisle, so passengers can relax in comfort.

Middle seats in the cabin can be private or combined, giving couples the opportunity to enjoy time together or apart during the flight.

Tasteful Upgrades In Economy

With 266 seats, Hawaiian’s Dreamliner main cabin was also designed with comfort and aesthetics in mind.

The specially designed economy seats maximize seat space through the ergonomic contours of the seatback and armrests.

Inflight entertainment will be available on the 12-inch seatback screens, which also have USB charging ports for passenger convenience.

Additionally, the main cabin will feature 79 “Extra Comfort” seats with added legroom and access to AC charging outlets for passengers who want a bit more space.

A Quieter Flight And Other High-Tech Perks

Beyond the beautifully designed interior, the Dreamliners will also feature several high-tech advances that will make the flying experience more comfortable and efficient. Some of these features include:

  • Sensors on toilets and faucets that allow them to be operated without touching
  • Acoustic-treated engine inlets that make for a quieter flight
  • Enhanced cabin air filtration, which allows for travel at a lower cabin altitude
  • Larger-than-average windows
  • Spacious overhead storage compartments

In addition to these noticeable features, there are also several elements that will benefit passengers in other ways.

Because of the lightweight structure, aerodynamics, and specialized engines, the new Dreamliners will be the most fuel-efficient widebody planes that Hawaiian Airlines operates.
