One of the more underrated parts of Mexico is its cultural border cities. They are quite literally a gateway into Mexico’s beautiful culture, but tend to hold a reputation of being dirty, run-down, and dangerous.
While that can be true in certain areas, why not view geography as your friend? Just across the U.S. is a country that thrives on tourism and is ready to embrace you with open arms.
If we all listened to potential dangers in the world we would be permanently glued to our couch. There are so many amazing places to explore and memories to be made along the journey.
When booking a Mexico getaway, Cancun, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta may come to mind. There is another city whose claim to fame is the ‘most visited city in the world’, yet it can take on hordes of more tourists.
American Airlines is courageous enough to go against the norm and shine the spotlight on this underrated destination with the first-ever nonstop flight from the U.S. to this rapidly growing hub of northern Baja.
Goodbye San Diego, Hello Tijuana
The two most reasonable ways to reach Tijuana have been by land from San Diego or by connecting via a Mexican airline.
San Diego is a gorgeous beach destination, but it comes with a premium price, especially in summer when travelers are ready for an exciting getaway.
Even if your final destination were to be Tijuana, you would likely be paying for a costly plane ticket. San Diego’s trolly system goes straight to the border for chump change, but reaching this California paradise is not for penny pinchers.
The other option has been connecting to other popular destinations in Mexico, such as Cancun or Mexico City.
Neither is optimal, but American Airlines is ready to be a game-changer and put Tijuana back on travelers’ radars.
From The Desert To The Ocean
Many Arizonians take road trips to California to escape the dry desert heat for much more appealing sandy beaches and ’75 and sunny’ days.
Now Arizonians can fly direct to Tijuana to explore this awesome city and use it as a gateway to stunning beaches either on the U.S. side or stay south of the border.
Tijuana is known more as a border town and foodie hotspot, as it should be. However, it’s also home to phenomenal beaches in close distance.
Although beautiful to look at, travelers may want to avoid the beaches in Tijuana proper due to sanitation issues, but Rosarito is a stunning city a short Uber away and well worth the trip.
American Airlines is making Tijuana so much easier to reach with the launch of a direct flight from Phoenix (PHX) this winter.
February 15, 2024 is slated to become the debut of this historic route with daily service at 10:59 a.m.
Beyond Just A ‘Border Town’
Yes, Tijuana has what you might expect from a border city. There are pharmacies everywhere you turn, conveniently placed dentists and taco stands for those adventurous enough to please their tastebuds with street food.
Those who haven’t paid a visit may not understand that Tijuana is not only a gateway to America, but a gateway into all of Mexico.
The recently revamped Tijuana airport is home to the Cross Border Express (CBX) making it easy to use as a gateway into San Diego or for Californians to access Mexico easier than ever.
Now that American is launching a new flight to Tijuana, exploring Mexico will remove this step as this will be the only international flight out of TIJ.
Mexican airlines have received the highest rating from the FAA, so travelers can connect via Tijuana to a plethora of popular Mexico destinations or make Tijuana their main stay.
Locals are friendly, welcoming, and happy to see you give their city a chance. Whether you are into beaches, food, nightlife or the vast wine country of northern Baja, you will quickly find this city is not exactly the crime-ridden danger zone as it has commonly been portrayed as.
