When it comes to beachy getaways, Mexico is on top of almost every traveler’s list.
The country broke its tourist arrival record before peak season even started, and considering the millions of tourists flocking to the dreamy Mexican shores as we speak, news of a new all-time high is just a matter of time.
However, sometimes even the stunning views and fascinating culture of our southern neighbor aren’t enough to convince people to endure the suffocating crowds at beaches and attractions alike, which are more chaotic than ever this time of year.
Those looking for a more serene escape this winter might stumble upon a gorgeous city by the name of Loreto.
Nestled along the Sea of Cortez coastline, this relatively unknown beach destination is an idyllic paradise waiting to be explored, and, according to Kayak’s best-time-to-travel algorithm, January and February are the perfect months to uncover the many underrated wonders of Loreto.
Flight Prices Are Low
Though December marks the beginning of the high season in Mexico, most travelers are setting off to well-known hotspots like Cancun, Mexico City, Los Cabos, or Puerto Vallarta, so airfare to the small Baja California city remains remarkably low.
According to Skyscanner, a round-trip ticket from the U.S. to Loreto for February starts at $250, while the same exact ticket bought in August would set you back almost $500.
The Kayak tool linked above, on the other hand, estimates January to be the cheapest month to fly to the beachy Mexican city, with February coming in at a close second.
Either way, one thing remains true – the perfect time to book those plane tickets to Loreto is now!
The Crowds Have Yet To Reach Their Peak
While, as I mentioned above, Loreto is a relatively unknown destination that isn’t too affected by the tourism surge of December or January, the small city can get a bit crowded once tourism reaches its peak in March.
So if you want to take advantage of the paradisic weather without having to suffer through crowded beaches and long wait lines at restaurants and attractions, now is the time to book your trip.
The lack of crowds also translates to a more personalized, intimate, and authentic experience.
You’ll find that the warmth and hospitality of the locals are even more pronounced when they actually have the time and inclination to engage with visitors, and the unhurried pace the city goes at while the streets are still quiet is sure to provide that sense of relaxation you’re after.
It’s Just The Right Kind Of Warm
Chances are that you knew exactly the type of weather I’m referring to just by reading that title.
January in Loreto brings a climate that’s just right for those seeking a sun-soaked getaway, with average temperatures hovering around 70°F (21°C).
These are the perfect conditions for almost every outdoor activity you can think of, given that the warm yet mild temperatures keep you away from the discomfort of extreme heat.
Beachgoers don’t have to worry, though.
The sea temperature remains inviting, ideal for snorkeling, kayaking, or simply lounging around on the pristine beaches that perfectly balance the warmth of the Mexican sun and the cool breeze that comes from the Sea of Cortez.
There’s Plenty To See And Do
While there’s no arguing that Loreto is a relaxing haven, the city is much more than just a place to sit back and take in the sunshine.
The marine life in the region, for example, is particularly vibrant during January and February, making this the ideal time for whale watching – Loreto is a famous viewing hotspot for blue whales, gray whales, orcas, and even dolphins.
For those with an even more adventurous spirit, the start of the year offers the perfect conditions for hiking and exploring the nearby mountains, of which Sierra de la Giganta promises some of the most breathtaking vistas.
On the other hand, travelers looking to immerse themselves in the local culture will adore Fiestas Tradicionales de Loreto, held in late January, which features everything from traditional dances to vibrant parades and delectable food.
