It’s all fun and games until you land yourself in a crowded destination with hordes of tourists and prices so high you barely know where to go or what to do.

Unfortunately, that’s the way tourism has been going nowadays: with most popular locations swarming with tourists.

According to the Daily Mail UK, the rankings for best and worst European coastal destinations have been revealed.

3,500 members were asked by the Consumer Champion to rate their experiences of coastal towns in Europe: ranking them from best to worst.

While Valencia took first place, another lesser-known Spanish destination made the list.

An unassuming resort town along Spain’s Costa Del Sol is a picturesque fantasy with winning views of the Med and surrounding mountains.

Based on the feedback, the small town got a 5 star for its seafront marina and another 5 under the category of peace and quiet.

Safety and tourist attractions also scored a high 4: making this lesser-known destination pretty well-rounded overall.

Did Someone Say Beach?

First off, the beaches in this area are supposed to be some of the nicer of the Costa Del Sol. Spain is known for its high temperatures, and with a European heat wave on the loose, you’ll want plenty of crystal-clear seas to swim in.

Nerja has no shortage. Beaches are lined with silky sands, beach bars, and lounge chairs for all to enjoy and beat the heat. One of the best beaches constantly is located nearby too! Burriana Beach is a must-visit if you’re staying here: see what the hype is about for yourself.

For The Love Of Food

Who doesn’t love a good Spanish meal? With a variety of tapas and fresh seafood caught from the ocean, it’s difficult to say no to some good food in Nerja.

If you think you’ve tried good paella before, wait until you try it along the coast. Nerja is known for having some of the best paella dishes in the region: and since the fish is fresh, it’s easy to see why!

But don’t fret. If you’re not a lover of fish, you’ll find alternative options in many of the other restaurants along the beaches and winding streets for you to enjoy.

Things To Do

Whether you’re looking to simply relax, or venture off-the-beaten-path, Nerja is bound to have something for you. Discovered in 1959, the Nerja caves are nearby and are a top attraction for visitors. On a humid afternoon, it’s especially nice to go underground.

The nearby town of Frigiliana is also an option for those looking to discover the beauty of Spain’s White Villages. High in the mountains, this spot is perfect for an afternoon stroll to admire the artisanal shops, charming streets, and quaint restaurants.

As Nerja is along the beach, there’s also a variety of water sports to try if you’re feeling daring. Boating, snorkeling, and parasailing, if you want it, it’s probably here!

Culture and Friendly Locals

Andalusia at its finest lies within Nerja. For a cultural experience, the city showcases various festivals and events throughout the year. Tourists can learn what it means to be from this region by meeting the locals and experiencing their way of life.

There’s also a healthy mix of all ages in Nerja. The locals are extremely welcoming to visitors and are always happy to share their recommendations on all things Nerja.

If you’re ready for more after a long day of culture and mingling, the nightlife is buzzing. Cuevas De Nerja is a popular spot for locals and travelers to really sample the bars that are waiting.
