A new survey has looked at all of the beach destinations in the world that have at least 20 hotels and inns and at least one inn.
For each destination, the ranking was based on the average price for the cheapest available double room in August 2023. Only hotels with at least 3 stars and close to either the beach or the town/city center were included.
Within these parameters you might be surprised to learn that 4 of the top 7 most expensive beach destinations in the world are located in the United States.
Overall 11 of the 20 most expensive beach destinations listed were in the United States.
These 7 beach destinations are the most expensive in the world:
Nantucket Town, USA
Nantucket Town is located on the island of Nantucket south of Cape Cod and was found to be not only the most expensive beach break in the USA but in the world.
The average August hotel price here is $694.
Nantucket is a popular vacation destination that boasts picturesque beaches, historical lighthouses, and great boutique shopping. It has a 100-mile coastline and many rich and famous Americans choose to keep second homes here.
Positano, Italy
Positano is known to be an expensive and luxurious destination thanks to its location on southern Italy’s elite Amalfi Coast.
The average August price for a double room in Positano is $481.

Positano is considered the most popular town on the Amalfi coast and visitors can enjoy the vibrant nightlife, colorful buildings, and incredible clifftop views as well as the beautiful beaches that attract visitors from around the world.
Montauk, USA
Montauk is a village on the Long Island peninsula in the United States.
Here you will pay $478 per night on average for a hotel’s least expensive double room during August.
As well as its beautiful beaches, Montauk also boasts six state parks. Montauk Beach is one of the most beautiful and revered on Long Island.
The area is particularly renowned for its fishing and Montauk is said to be the site of more world saltwater fishing records than any other port in the world.
Saint Tropez, France
Saint Tropez is a famous French resort town that has a reputation for attracting the elite, the rich, and the famous. It attracts a huge number of yachts each summer.
This is the fourth most expensive beach resort and the second most expensive beach resort outside of the United States.
If you don’t have your own luxury yacht to sleep on then you can expect to pay an average of $440 per night here for a double room during August.
Kennebunkport, USA
The third most expensive location for a beach break in the U.S. and the fifth most expensive place for a beach break in the world is Kennebunkport.
The average cost of a double room in an inn or hotel in Kennebunkport will cost you $406 per night during the peak summer period.
Kennebunkport is famous for its beaches. The two most popular are the long and sandy Goose Rocks Beach and the smaller photogenic Arundel Beach. Kennebunkport also boasts a wide array of small boutiques, art galleries and restaurants.
Provincetown, USA
Provincetown is a beautiful beach resort with a rich history and an eclectic colony of artists in residence.
It is also famous for having one of the largest LGBTQ communities in the country.
But a visit to Provincetown won’t come cheap during the summer months.
The average hotel room in Provincetown will cost $404 a night during the month of August.
Capri Town, Italy
Finally, the 7th most expensive beach resort in the world is Capri Town in Italy.
A hotel room in Capri Town in Italy will cost $399 per night during the peak summer month of August.
Capri is considered Italy’s most desirable destination. It is an elegant town where visitors can break up their time on the beach with fine dining and high-end shoppers.
This means that it definitely isn’t the ideal destination for travelers on a budget!
