As one of the biggest travel trends in recent years, solo travel is everywhere right now.
More cities, countries, and continents are emerging as the top places for a solo trip. One country that is recently gaining in popularity with travelers of all genres, including solo travelers, is Slovakia.
This Central European landlocked country might not have any coastline, but it does offer endless mountain scenery, culture-paced cities, and more towns and villages than you can possibly explore in one trip.
Slovakia is trending this year, and there are lots of reasons solo travelers are among the large percentage of travelers that are flocking to this country,
While Slovakia might only be less than half the size of the state of New York, there is loads of beauty, culture, and history to explore.
For example, this is the country that has the most castles and châteaux per capita in the world, with 180 castles and over 400 châteaux.

Here’s Why Slovakia Is Trending With Solo Travelers:
Location Location Location
While the nearby cities such as Hungary’s Budapest and Austria’s Vienna tend to get much more attention, only a short train ride away, you can find Slovakia’s capital city of Bratislava. Reachable in under an hour from Austria’s beloved Vienna, and about three hours from Budapest, the cozy capital of Bratislava draws visitors in for its quint streets and quirky statues.
Although it might get lost in the overwhelming attention to its nearby more famous cities, Bratislava is hailed as being a favorite with solo travelers. The city and country make a perfect base for exploring the region of Central Europe, and bus, train, and flight connections make getting around easy and convenient.
Budget Friendly
Although it’s not as cheap as nearby Romania or Bulgaria, Slovakia is much more cost-effective than most of the other countries in this region. While the capital of Bratislava can be a bit more pricey than the rest of the country, the cost of everything from accommodation to food still pales in comparison to the other nearby capitals.
Visiting the rest of the country can be cheaper than the capital, of course, and many astute travelers will tell you that the further east you go, the cheaper things will be. Don’t miss towns such as Nitra, Levoca, and Banska Bystrica.
Slovakia is also full of breweries and wineries, and they offer world-class tastes at a fraction of the prices of other European wine-producing regions. So don’t miss a chance to visit these and partake in some tastings without breaking the bank.

Safe And Friendly
Of course, when it comes to planning a solo travel itinerary, considering the safety of a location is usually the top priority, and Slovakia ticks that box for sure.
In 2023’s Global Peace Index, Slovakia ranked in 26th place worldwide. This is a country that is overall peaceful, with a low crime rate. Of course, it should go without saying that following normal precautions is advised here, especially when in the city.
Aside from the safety, the locals are known to be some of the friendliest and most open to tourists in the region. Some solo female travelers remark that they find the locals are always happy to help and offer advice when approached, making solo female travelers feel welcome and safe.
Stunning In All Seasons
With summer over, it’s time to start looking at which places make a great designation for the upcoming colder months, and Slovakia is a great choice for many reasons. The mountains and landscape come alive with an array of colors in the fall, and the snow that arrives in the winter makes the county look positively magical.
There is so much to explore across Slovakia in any weather, with over 20 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, from the medieval town of Bardejov to the historic gem of Banska Štiavnica.
In addition to the historic sites, there are also many reasons to come for nature. Slovakia has over 1500 mineral springs to enjoy, offering everything from fresh drinking water to thermal baths, a perfect way to enjoy the colder season.
