There were more cruise ships arriving in Dubrovnik in October than there were in July and August, but despite this, fall and winter are by far the quietest time of year for tourism in the city.
The walled city of Dubrovnik has imposing stone walls surrounding the old town and a mix of Baroque and Renaissance architecture. This walled city is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Because space is so limited, it can be uncomfortably crowded to explore Dubrovnik during the summer months. This summer, the city council even prevented travelers from wheeling suitcases during the area to minimize pavement congestion.
Winter in Dubrovnik is the best time of year to walk the city walls. The fascinating full circuit of the 24m high and 6m thick walls is a two-kilometer-long route.
During the summer you have to fight for a spot on these walls and taking photos without other people’s heads in is near-impossible, but during the winter months, you can walk them in comfort and at your own pace.
Winter is a great time to visit Dubrovnik if you like to travel spontaneously because you can enjoy all the best attractions in the city without having to book. This applies to both activities and restaurants.
It’s a great opportunity to visit the famous Panoramic restaurant which gives some of the best views in the city. This restaurant is usually booked full during the summer months.
Croatian food is delicious and shares many similarities with Italian food. You’ll find cheap eats, rich dishes, and local ingredients.
Affordable Hotel Prices
Because crowd levels are lower, hotel prices tend to be more affordable in Dubrovnik in the winter months. This makes it a great time for budget travelers to head to the city.
The months between November and March are considered low season in Dubrovnik, and this is when you will get the best low season rates on your accommodation.
Restaurants also have deals, and tour guides charge less during these low-season months, making it a great time to find a deal.
From the end of November until the beginning of January, Dubrovnik hosts its winter festival.
This is a fun event that brings lights and atmosphere to the streets of the city and is a great way to experience Dubrovnik like a local.
The whole city has a fairytale-like, serene atmosphere, and there are tonnes of cultural events and experiences hosted throughout the festival.
Music lovers will find concerts covering every imaginable genre. The whole experience is a fun addition to the classic and historic explorations that people tend to travel to Dubrovnik for.
