You either eat to live or live to eat. And if food is your life then why not make it the focus of your next vacation?
Culinary travel is a growing trend with food lovers heading around the world to try new flavors and experience new food cultures.
The experts at Titan Travel have created a food lovers index to choose the best foodie hotspots for your next trip.
These are the top 7 foodie destinations in the world:
7. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
From street food to fine dining, Kuala Lumpur is heaven for foodies.
The typical cuisine in Kuala Lumpur is either sweet or spicy. One of the most famous and popular dishes is Laksa which is made of rice noodles and chicken, prawn or fish, served in a rich, spicy broth with coconut milk.
Pisang goreng (banana fritters) is one of Kuala Lumpur’s best street food dishes, and sweet Chendol is a favorite local dessert in Kuala Lumpur. This cold and refreshing dessert is made with shaved ice, green rice flour jelly noodles, coconut milk, palm sugar syrup, and red beans.
There are two Michelin-starred restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. Dewakan serves modern Malaysian dishes, and D.C By Darren Chin specializes in French cuisine made with regional ingredients.
6. Denpasar, Indonesia
The 6th best global destination for foodies is Denpasar in Indonesia. You can eat your way through Denpasar, and you won’t be disappointed with the local cuisine.
Denpasar is a lesser-known area of Bali and isn’t an obvious tourist hub. But despite this it is the best spot for foodies in Indonesia.
Visit local restaurants and fresh food markets, enjoy authentic and delicious food, and as an added bonus the prices will be much lower here than in other parts of the country.
Dishes not to be missed include traditional Indonesian satay, rich fried rice, and beef rendang.
5. Taipei, Taiwan
Taipei is an amazing spot for foodies which is why it was listed as the 5th best food destination in the world. It has a well-deserved reputation as a foodie paradise.
Taipei has an incredible food culture and Taiwanese food is heavily influenced by its neighboring countries. There are many Chinese and Japanese influences in the cuisine here.
The best place to go if you want to eat in Taipei is the city’s night markets. The Shilin Night Market is the biggest and most famous in the city which means it has a high-energy feel. Try the Ningxia Night Market if you’re not interested in shopping and are looking for a market focused solely on selling delicious food.
Dishes not to be missed in Taipei include Taiwanese hot pot, hujiao bing (pepper buns), and of course the country is famous for its bubble teas.
4. Amsterdam, Netherlands
When it comes to food, Amsterdam is a truly global destination. Historically an important port city, people from all over the world would arrive in Amsterdam and bring their favorite dishes with them.
This means that you can find amazing Chinese food, Indian food, and other world cuisines in Amsterdam.
But if you’re hoping to indulge in some traditional Dutch dishes then you should try both savory and sweet Dutch pancakes, stroopwaffles, patat (fried potatoes), and Dutch raw herring. This is a traditional street food and a local delicacy.
Dutch food is comfort food. It is filling, often fried, and hearty. It is a great destination for fuss-free foodies with big appetites.
3. Miami, United States
You don’t need to travel far to find a world-renowned foodie destination and Miami is not only the third-best food destination in the world it is also the number 1 foodie destination in the U.S.
This sunny seaside city not only boasts an abundance of excellent American restaurants it is also home to a huge community of Latin American and Caribbean restauranteurs. This means that you’ll find plenty of traditional Latin and Caribbean cuisine in the city, too.
There are a whopping 11 Michelin-starred restaurants in Miami. If you’re not sure which one to try, then head to L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, which is the only restaurant in the state to be awarded 2 Michelin stars.
2. Barcelona, Spain
The 2nd best destination in the world for foodies is Barcelona. This destination also ranked particularly highly for its number of restaurants catering to children, which is ideal if you travel as a family.
Spanish food is rich and flavorful and many of the most iconic dishes are recognized worldwide. You can’t escape food in Spain: tiny tapas dishes are served in every bar and social interactions revolve around food.
Dishes not to be missed include paella, Iberian ham, and seafood particularly because Barcelona is a coastal city. Though there are chain and high-end restaurants in Barcelona, the best way to eat in the city is to visit local and traditional Catalan eateries.
It’s good news for vegans and vegetarians as despite traditional Catalan food involving plenty of meat and cheese, Barcelona has the most vegan restaurants per square kilometer of any other city.
1. Paris, France
Paris has once again outshone every other city in the world as the foodie capital. It has more fine dining eateries and more Michelin-star establishments per capita than any other country in the world.
Paris was also rated as the best city in the world for vegetarians, which is a surprise given that meat, cheese, and other rich ingredients are an integral part of French cuisine.
The best restaurant in the world is in Paris and shouldn’t be missed if you’re a fan of fine dining. Guy Savoy’s restaurant at La Monnaie de Paris was named world number 1 by the renowned restaurant guide La Liste.
The top foods to try in Paris include patisserie from Cedric Grolet, steak frites, a cocktail at the Bar Hemingway, and freshly baked macarons.
