There’s nothing revolutionary about the idea of going to Florida in the winter.
But doing so is a popular move for American travelers for a reason (well, many, in fact) – Florida is just a darn pleasant place to be while the rest of the country is freezing.
There are many winter escapes to choose from in Florida, but one 125-mile-long island chain in particular will always be one of the best places to visit in winter.
Here are five reasons why the Florida Keys should be in your winter travel plans:
Warmest Winter Weather In The U.S.
Southern Florida in general is one of the warmest places on the U.S. mainland in winter, and if you venture out onto the many islands of the Keys, you’ll find it warmer still.
Winter temperatures sit between 70 and 75F on average, while December, January, and February are the three months with the least rainfall in this part of the state.
The seas around the Keys also stay relatively warm throughout winter, so taking a dip each morning is definitely not out of the question.
You’re also looking at between 8 and 9 hours of sunlight on winter days – helping you top up on that vital vitamin D.
Investment In Accommodation And Restaurants
You can’t hide from the fact that the Florida Keys is not the cheapest place in the country to hang out. However, the money you spend is being constantly invested in the amenities to improve traveler experience.
The Casa Marina Key West, Curio Collection by Hilton hotel has just undergone a huge renovation and now features 63 suites with oceanfront balconies.
Meanwhile, other popular hotels such as the La Concha Key West and Faro Blanco Resort and Yacht Club are both currently undergoing significant improvements that will enhance the facilities they offer.
As for food and drink options, the Isla Bella Beach Resort has just opened an al fresco sushi restaurant called Sushi Cabana, while a new brewery with a tasting room called Cayo Hueso Brewing has just opened on Stock Island.
The Choice Of Flights Is Growing
With each passing year, there are more and more options available to choose from when it comes to flying to this Floridian paradise.
Key West International Airport is currently undergoing a significant expansion due to be completed in early 2025, but even while the work is ongoing, the number of available flight seats into the airport is growing.
You can fly direct to Key West from Chicago, Houston, and Washington with new flights from United Airlines, while JetBlue has just opened its seasonal winter flight path from Boston.
Once the airport renovation is complete, there will be even more bars and restaurants inside, meaning you can extend your trip right up until you board the flight home.
Unique Experiences To Be Had
The Keys are a unique part of the country, and as such, there are some unique experiences to be had there.
You can live the island life without your passport, which is one of the most advantageous ones!
But besides sunrise yoga on the beach or sundown cocktails during happy hour, there are some more affordable experiences you can have in the Keys.
A new Florida Keys Eco-Experience Trail Pass was recently launched that allows you to access almost 50 different free experiences.
It includes everything from kayaking trips to exploring wildlife refuges – and it can all be booked through a mobile app.
Enjoy It Before It Gets Too Busy
While the winter in Florida is not what you’d call quiet, it is certainly not the busiest time of year to visit, either.
The spring is usually the peak time, so by visiting in the winter and the very early spring, you can enjoy many of the tranquil and idyllic spots here with fewer tourists than at peak times.
It is only a small place though, so don’t expect to have it all to yourself.
