Mexico is the number one most visited destination by American travelers, and these three hotspots are the most popular for 2023.
According to travel insurance company Allianz Partners, these are the top three destinations in Mexico most popular with American travelers this summer.
This data is based on flights booked from Memorial Day through Labor Day of this year.
It’s no surprise that the top three most popular vacation hotspots in Mexico are all beach destinations, as many American travelers want to plan the perfect summer beach getaway.
1. Cancun
Coming in at the top of this list is Cancun. Not only is it the most popular destination in Mexico, but it’s also the number one international travel destination in the world for Americans.
Americans continue flocking to Cancun because of its beautiful beaches, the abundance of resorts for every travel style and budget, and easy access from the United States. (Nearly 40 cities in the United States have nonstop flights to Cancun.)
Cancun is also the primary travel hub on the Riviera Maya, the Caribbean coast of Mexico, which is home to other popular destinations like Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Travelers heading to these trendy destinations must also pass through Cancun, which is why the city set a new all-time high tourism record in 2022 with over 30 million visitors.

2. San Jose Del Cabo
Another one of the most popular destinations in Mexico for American travelers is San Jose del Cabo. This city is the gateway to Los Cabos, the stretch of coastline which stretches from San Jose del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas, 20 miles to the south.
Los Cabos is known for its stunning Pacific coast beaches, great resorts and hotels, dramatic scenery, and plenty of adventure and water activities.
This destination has been increasing in popularity in recent years, to the point where it is now the number two most popular destination in the world for American travelers after Cancun.
Los Cabos is also one of the safest destinations in Mexico, making it great for a carefree summer vacation this year.
3. Puerto Vallarta
Finally, Puerto Vallarta is the third most popular vacation hotspot in Mexico for Americans this summer. (And the seventh most popular international travel destination in the world, according to the data from Allianz Partners.)
This is another fantastic beach destination in Mexico, located on the Pacific coast. It’s been quickly rising in popularity with American travelers, setting a new all-time high tourism record in 2022 with more than 6.2 million visitors.
Travelers love Puerto Vallarta because of its gorgeous beaches, delicious restaurants, and vibrant nightlife, offering something for everyone.
Puerto Vallarta also won an award for being the best destination in Mexico at the 2022 Travvy Awards, which goes to show that this beach destination is only going to continue its upward trajectory.
Mexico Off The Beaten Path
While Cancun, San Jose del Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta are the most popular summer destinations in Mexico, you may be looking for a place where you can escape the summer crowds and enjoy a more authentic Mexican experience.
While these vacation hotspots are popular for a reason, that also comes with drawbacks like large crowds and inflated prices on everything from hotels to food to activities.
You can experience a different side of Mexico for a fraction of the cost and with lower crowds in many underrated destinations.
These are some of the best alternatives to popular Mexico travel destinations.
You may also consider exploring one of Mexico’s other incredible destinations, such as the capital Mexico City or one of Oaxaca’s Magical Towns.
